[ Little known facts about online music piracy ]

IndieScan is an internet-wide effort to chart and statistically rank as many independently-released songs as possible that are available for download or playback on the internet.

Major Label acts (i.e. web sites that provide song files from Major Label acts) are EXCLUDED from the system, and the system does not include internet radio or CD sales. It is therefore a pure gauge of independent music activity in terms of how many times a song is downloaded or listened to "on-demand". In this way we can locate and identify the independent artists whose work is deemed the most popular on the internet by virtue of the sheer number of times their work has been downloaded. Very often, these are artists who are "falling between the cracks" and not getting noticed by the mainstream media (but who SHOULD be). It is IndieScan's mission to change the status quo of Major Label dominance, and help shine a spotlight on those independent artists who are deserving of wider acclaim.

For example, say your label has a website, and your song file catalog is getting a few hundreds "hits" per day. Everyday. You know there's activity. You can see it. But who else knows? And when you tell people, how can you independently verify it to prove that you're not just blowing smoke?

IndieScan levels the playing field by providing a 24/7 monitor of your web site's music files to show the world how many times your music has been listened to: daily, weekly, and monthly. If your music is getting listened to, IndieScan will know it, and the charts will prove it.

IndieScan takes the raw statistics from thousands of web sites daily and compiles a chart, ranking all the songs downloaded each day by popularity (i.e. number of downloads).

Included with each listing on the daily chart is the name of the artist, the title of the CD, the label, and the URL's to hear the song, buy the song, or find out more about the artist.

We call it a "daily" chart, but in reality it's a "momentary chart", as it changes moment to moment as new polling data streams into the system. Just as the sun travels through all the global time-zones each day, new data is constantly streaming in, and the system automatically updates the charts as each new site report arrives.

As an extra-added benefit to the system, IndieScan includes PAN's patent-pending "DIF" technology of anti-theft protection built-in to the software.

And best of all, IndieScan is free.
