Signing of mystery novel set in Pasadena an appropriate event for bookstore grand opening

When Crime Time Books, Pasadena's newest mystery bookstore, holds its Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, July 20, a particularly appropriate author will be on hand to sign first editions of his new book.

Show Control is a mystery/thriller that isn't just set in Pasadena -- much of it was written in various Pasadena coffeehouses. "I'd take a pad and pen out to Shakers on Arroyo or over to the Talking Room on Colorado and do my plotting, and then head back home to write on my computer," says author Keith Snyder. "I didn't have a laptop computer at that time, but much of the sequel -- which isn't yet published -- was written on a laptop at Shakers. I got to know the wait staff pretty well."

The Pasadena location is more than just window dressing, Keith says. "The places in the book are the places I know. The main character's a musician who lives at an old boarding house I used to live in over at Marengo and Del Mar. There's even a little fight scene at the E-Bar. The old E-Bar, that is, before they moved over to Green Street, back when you had to go down two alleys and through a red door."

"Mystery Scene's" advance review of "Show Control" said, "the archetype of the amateur detective is taken to a new level of wit," and "Small Press Magazine" called it "an entertaining and notable first novel that really sparkles... crisp, cryptic, and humorously cynical"
